Sides & Souls: A Journey Through Distorted Perception

Sides & Souls: A Journey Through Distorted Perception

June 27, 2010

An immersive performance art piece exploring the human body's relationship with time and space through 3D projection mapping technology.

Sides & Souls

Where Technology Meets Movement

'Sides and Souls' presents a compelling reflection on the human body as it navigates through life's complexities. This groundbreaking performance piece creates a mesmerizing experience where perception of time and space is fundamentally altered through advanced 3D projection mapping techniques.

The performance takes the audience on an introspective journey, examining the human form from a macro perspective while compressing the experience into micro-time – creating a fascinating dichotomy that challenges our conventional understanding of existence.

The Creative Vision

This interdisciplinary project represents a seamless fusion of art forms, bringing together contemporary dance, visual art, and technological innovation. The creative team worked in close collaboration to create a cohesive experience where each element enhances the others:

  • Director & Visual Artist: Ersinhan Ersin
  • Movement Sequence Design & Performance: Göksu Kunak
  • Interaction Programming & OF Artist: Serkan Sökmen
  • Costume Design: Meriç Canatan

Technical Innovation

At the heart of 'Sides and Souls' lies sophisticated 3D projection mapping technology paired with OpenFrameworks programming. This technical foundation allows for reactive visual elements that respond to the performer's movements, creating a dialogue between the physical and digital realms.

The projection mapping transforms ordinary surfaces into dynamic canvases, bending reality and challenging the audience to reconsider their perception of physical space – much like how the choreography challenges conventional notions of time.

Exhibition History

'Sides and Souls' premiered at Cermodern in Ankara, Turkey in 2010. The complete performance runs approximately 19 minutes and 50 seconds, offering a concentrated yet profound exploration of its themes.

Behind the Process

The creation of 'Sides and Souls' involved extensive experimentation at the intersection of technology and movement. The team developed custom software solutions to ensure precise synchronization between the performer's movements and the projected visuals, resulting in a seamless integration that blurs the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds.
